Product Description

98 POINTS HUON HOOKE - "A magical wine, refined and stylish, with piercing aromas of smoky/toasty pinot, a hint of mushroom and even vegemite. Rich, full palate with profound, powerful flavour. Endless aftertaste of great harmony."

97 POINTS TYSON STELZER - 2004 La Grande Dame follows 1998. This is a mind-boggling statement, considering the years in between. No other house, bar none, skipped these five vintages. The endorsement that this in itself places on 2004 in the Clicquot cellars cannot be overstated. And the wine delivers. My goodness, does it deliver! Close acquaintances of La Grande Dame will fondly recall the layered complexity of 1998. Six years younger, 2004 is breathtakingly pristine and youthful. Its defining feature is its minerality, its deep and all-pervading chalk. An exceedingly refined fruit profile is alive with energy and awe-inspiring persistence, uniting red fruits, lemon and grapefruit zest with a flicker of mixed spice and toast.”

96 POINTS JAMES HALLIDAY - True to form, Demarville presented this wine first, not last; I have never encountered this approach before, the rationale lying in the complete nature of the wine. A blend of 61% pinot noir and 39% chardonnay from grand cru vineyards, it was disgorged last year, the dosage 7g/l. The fine mousse helps generate beautiful mouthfeel to its array of rounded peach and apple fruit, contrasting notes of cream and mineral dancing through the long travel in the mouth.

95 POINTS MIKE BENNIE - Immediately ultra fresh citrus, orchard fruit, blossom aromas. Steely almost, chalk and talc perfume too. Laser-like in the palate, structured and tense, still coats the mouth but in gossamer-like delicacy, finishes very fine and long. Reveals the hand of heavier pinot noir in faint strawberry wafts in the bouquet and in slender chalky tannin, the residual presence of very faint red fruits with soft sweetness. A hand print in sand. Very precise, so much detail to investigate in the mouth, and most important, spectacularly refreshing. A very good LGD vintage.

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame is name in honour of the famed and undoubted Champagne pioneer, widow Clicquot. Widowed at the tender age of 28, Madame Clicquot continued her late husband's work and is the sole reason why her Champagne house is held in the high esteem that it is today. The 1998 La Grande Dame is a wine of pure beauty and power. A majority blend of Pinot Noir, the vintage conditions are clearly visible in the glass with flavours of peach, apricot and touch of brioche and nuttiness. A true classic for the ages.
