Product Description

Three Dark Horses is the new project for former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead. When the opportunity arose in 2009 to make wine from Bruno Romano’s old vineyard in the Seaview subregion of McLaren Vale, Matt teamed up with his father Alan and grandfather Frank and the Three Dark Horses were born.

Today Matt and Alan run this small label with Matt’s 88-year-old grandfather Frank a vintage regular. Their focus is on producing small batch, hand made, and affordable wines of character.

All of the work is done in our small facility 10 minutes north of McLaren Vale. The range consists of a Grenache Rose, a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Touriga Nacional, a single vineyard old vine Grenache and a single vineyard Shiraz.

Winemaking The fruit was hand harvested on 23 March 2011 and taken to our winery where it was crushed into open top fermenters with 20% of the berries remaining as whole bunches to lift the fruit intensity. It was then inoculated with a Spanish isolated yeast strain specific for Grenache. During the eight day fermentation the wine was pumped over twice a day to extract maximum flavour and colour from the skins. It was pressed by our small one tonne basket press into 15% new and seasoned French oak, where the wine was allowed to sit “sur lie” or ageing on yeast solids for six months. The wine was racked twice before careful barrel selection, blending and bottling in September 2012.

Tasting note This wine shows the benefits of a cool vintage: spicy aromas of red fruits, cinnamon and white pepper with a soft juicy palate and flavours of raspberry, cinnamon and rhubarb. A lovely soft tannin finish makes this wine a delight to drink on its own or with gamey dishes. Analysis pH: 3.64 Acid: 6.3 g/L Alcohol: 14.2% Sugar: dry
