A good match with seafood and fresh summer salad.                                                                                                                                               Winemaker overview
The debate rages as to the merits of Semillon dominance versus Sauvignon Blanc dominance in the white Bordeaux varietal blends. At Fraser Gallop Estate we believe that by creating a wine dominant in Semillon we highlight the strength of the variety in the Wilyabrup sub-region. The relative warmth of the area compared to the southern sub-regions allows us to ripen the Semillon beyond the herbal elements, achieving golden bunches with a strong citrus flavour. This is complemented by the Sauvignon Blanc which we source from further south in Karridale. Coming from a cooler area it has zesty acid and punchy aromatics giving the wine some lovely passionfruit and gooseberry notes on the nose.
Vintage 2013
We started the season well with good spring rains which topped up the dams and replenished the sub-soil moisture. The calm conditions allowed even flowering and gave us the best yet fruit set across all varieties. Bunch numbers were high in the Chardonnay and Cabernet, however the berry sizes were small due to the warm and dry summer which started during veraison and continued. These conditions contributed to Vintage 2013 being one of high yield and high quality.
This season saw some very hot temperatures in January, with 40.8C on Australia Day (3.6C warmer than the average of previous 7 years), and dry conditions with only 9.1 mm of rain falling in January. February and March saw some cooler conditions with an average maximum in the mid to high twenties and conditions remained dry. April saw a cooler change and a bit of rain with an average maximum temperature of 23.6C and 56.7 mm of rain. Night-time temperatures were considerably lower across summer than the previous year which was great for maintaining acid levels in the grapes.
Winemaking Notes
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes were machine harvested at Karridale and the Semillon was hand-picked from the Estate vineyard in the cool hours of the morning and delivered promptly to the crush pad. The grapes were de-stemmed, crushed and gently pumped through a must chiller on their way to the press to get them down to 8ºC. With the automatic Ortal computerised pressing programme the quality of pressing was superb with minimal rotations required.
The juices were settled at 8ºC. Three days later the moderately clear juice was racked off gross lees and warmed to 16º C for fermentation. The juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks to maintain the freshness, bright fruit flavours and aromatics using two different yeasts. A third of the fruit was fermented in new and one year old French oak barriques and stainless steel barrels. This adds to the complexity, structure and length of flavour in the wine. Sulphites were added to the wine on completion of fermentation to deter Malolactic Fermentation from occurring and to preserve the fruit flavours of the wine. The wine was protein and cold stabilised prior to blending, cross flow filtering and bottling.
Colour and condition: Pale straw with lime green hues.
Nose: Passionfruit, lychees, and nettles on the nose.
