3 Reasons Why Cloudy Bay is One of Our All-Time Favourite Wineries and Should Be Yours Too

Posted by

Cloudy Bay is a Marlborough classic – not only because it’s located in the heart of the famous New Zealand cool climate region, but because it expresses the area's essence to a tee. Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay has made a big slash in the wine world and its sauv blanc is particularly popular. Wine Online is proud to stock two of their bottles, the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc ($32.99) and the Pelorus Brut NV ($26.99), currently on sale for 25% off RRP.

Here are three reasons to have Cloudy Bay on your radar, if it isn't already.

1. Their sustainable practices

Australia's wine market is extremely competitive and many winemakers resort to using herbicides and other unfavourable practices that take a toll on the environment. Cloudy Bay uses machinery in their vineyards that drastically reduces the need for herbicides. Their ‘understory' plants are carefully minded and cultivated to encourage soil health and plant vitality. In the winter, sheep graze the vineyard, spreading manure and organic compost matter. Their multitasking tractor operations reduce diesel consumption and they recycle all waste water accumulated during production. Cloudy Bay's practices are just as green as their vineyards.

2. Their lovely cellar door

Cloudy Bay hosts wine lovers from all over the world in their beautiful tasting room. The staff is approachable and knowledgable, and on holidays and weekends the area is buzzing with visitors tasting wine, sampling the unique menu and playing patentee or croquet. There’s a gorgeous outdoor area with an array of stylish furniture and soft green lawns surrounded by shady trees with swinging chairs overlooking a blissful vista. We suggest making reservations. This winery is in high demand.

3. Magnificent Marlborough

Cloudy Bay has been internationally recognised and has in turn brought a lot of attention to the Marlborough region from all over the globe. Marlborough is known for its cool climate wines, rich soil and mountain peaks on the horizon. Cloudy Bay is located in the flood plain of the Wairau River, an area that enjoys more sunlight hours than any other region on New Zealand. A plethora of perfect factors allow Marlborough to produce some of the freshest, liveliest wines on the market.
