Product Description

The Eden Valley provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality Rieslings such as this. The 2011 vintage was cooler than usual and the moist ripening conditions allowed us to pick the fruit at a higher natural acidity but with excellent flavour ripe characters. The intense varietal aromas are followed by a green apple palate and a crisp, refreshing finish. Enjoy with natural oysters or grilled whiting.

Vineyard Notes

Eden Valley is a cool climate region nestled between 400 and 600 metres above sea level and is part of the Barossa and Mount Lofty Ranges. It is rough, rocky country that belies its ability to produce wines of great delicacy and finesse. The soils are derived from schistic and sedimentary rock with red clay soils and sandy, silty loams interspersed with schistic gravels. The cooler climate of the Eden Valley allows fruit to experience longer ripening periods which is perfect for flavour accumulation and intensity.

Vintage Report

Cooler than average temperatures in September and October delayed the onset of budburst until late October while the plentiful Spring rain encouraged healthy vine growth. Over a mild summer the ground retained good levels of soil moisture resulting in larger than normal canopies in vineyards, requiring regular trimming to ensure sufficient sunlight and airflow reached the grapes to reduce the risk of disease. Vintage commenced on 4 March at Bethany Wines, a full month later than in 2010; the cooler temperatures resulting in slow, even ripening of the fruit and good flavour development. The 2011 white wines are very strong with lifted aromatics and freshness, and great varietal definition. The reds are showing good colour and intense flavours.

Winemaking Report

The grapes were picked early in the season to retain the desired clean fresh fruit flavours and natural acidity. They were crushed and then gently pressed to collect the free run juice which was fermented under controlled temperature conditions of 12-16 degrees for 8-10 days to retain the delicate fruit characters of this varietal.
